Monster to foes, Protector of friend.
Some nostalgic fun here. Growing up, you either played Pkmn or Yugioh. It was like… pick one or both but don’t be a kid without a game or you were lame loll.
No diss to gen Z on how they help turn PKMN cards to a billion dollar industry of collecting but that was when we actually played with the cards. (I cried to my gmom once bc I wanted Kaiba deck but Toys R Us only had Joey Deck smh).
The video games as well, we played the games like how most use social media today; NONstop, all day lol. In fact, Yugioh and PKMN were the only things that could actually interrupt playing outside. And we’d STILL be outside, DEEP, playing either of the two lol.
Me personally?..
as a kid I thought that YuGiOh would ultimately outpace PKMN because there was more to the game of YuGiOh in my eyes.
PKMN had more characters/creatures and the tv show too, sure, but Yugi was on TV too! Loll. And every Saturday too man; chain on (me AND Yugi), ready. Whatever, I’m not hating at all, you are.
Anyway, I now see that my biased love for Yugioh stemmed from..
• the detailed design behind the cards (I obv love art and to draw and Yugioh matches my interest style)
• the math involved in the card game. 1. It helped me with school. 2. I knew that even if the other kid had better cards.. I could still win bc of the point system. Either because of an unexpected LP to 0 win or because they lost count and I was the only one who knew the score. Lol.
• And lastly, the story of the show! It was some smoke in the city every episode. Yugi was down to just say f it and throw hands honestly a few times. Thats on the heart of the cards. SMH.
And so yeah, that biasly made me believe (and still do, wym?) that YuGiOh was funner to play, to watch, to collect, everything.
Only thing PKMN had on YuGiOh at the time (childhood/2003 or something) was how fun the GBA games were.
now..
Okay…
I’m not going to lie..
I was hooked on my GBA like a junkie. Since the day I got my Indigo GBA w Ruby on Christmas from my pops (plus the N64 PKMN Stadium bundle 😭🔥) lol. So PKMN probably has more hours from me. lol
All in all, YuGiOh and Pkmn were my favorite two games to play as a kid. I’m probably still considered a little obsessed with both hence these paintings lol.
